Role overview
Purpose
The LV Business Unit Manager is responsible for leading and managing the LV team, ensuring efficient and economical execution of tendering, business development, design, manufacturing, and Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) of LV, MCC, distribution, and measurement panels. The role involves providing engineering expertise to customers and internal departments while ensuring that the company meets its contractual obligations in terms of time, cost, and specifications.
Minimum requirement
- BSc Electrical Engineering or B-Tech in Electrical Engineering (Heavy Current) or G.C.C
- 5 Years' experience in design and application of LV Motor Control, Power distribution systems and Relay Protection.
- Experience in Electrical power Engineering Commissioning of Protection Systems and testing Protection Relays.
- Management of a manufacturing operation.
Duties
Design Engineering Schemes
- Maintain regular contact with principals to take advantage of the latest technology developments.
- To perform customer application engineering and circuit design of protection and control systems.
- To direct local content substitution efforts with due regard to cost as well as application and quality assurance requirements.
To perform engineering work such as:
- LV Motor Control & Power Distribution Systems, Protection, Metering and Control System Design
- Standardisation
- Manufacturing Instructions
- To supervise the preparation of good quality drawings for customer approval and later use on site and customer records
- To check and approve the abo\ie drawings
- To direct and perform development programs for new Eskom prototype protection schemes
General Engineering
- To assist with the preparation of complete and detailed production packages with respect
to specifications and special instructions.
- To ensure the LV systems are manufactured to acceptable safety standards and quality requirements.
- To resolve any production problems on LV systems in general.
- To liaise with the team in the submission of drawings to Customers, Customer Contract Meetings and the agreement of cost-effective technical solutions within the constraints of the Contract.
- To give technical support to the Department on all aspects of LV Engineering.
Tenders
- To interpret the technical specification documents and drawings of tenders with respect to the following:
- The local content material to be used.
- The imported content to be used.
- The estimated man hours to complete the contract.
- To compile general layout engineering drawings, bill of materials, technical comments and schedules as a complete tendering package.
- To ensure that the equipment offered complies with the technical specification.
- To liaise with Consulting Engineers and customers on all technical non-conformances regarding tender documents.
- To ensure that a highly competitive and viable package is offered to customers that would satisfy customer requirements and quality standards at tender stage.
Customer Support
- To maintain good relations with all customers. To advise customers on:
- The correct application of LV designs
- The correct LV philosophy
- Economical use of Breakers, Heat dissipation calculations, fault calculations etc.
- The correct testing and commissioning procedures for LV, protection systems and relays
Support to LV Motor Control & Power Distribution System Sales and Market Department
- To propose in liaison with the LV Business Development Manager/Sales team, the development of products specifically directed to the South African market.
- To assist the sales department on technical aspects of tendering.
- To support Sales Engineers/Technicians on a regular basis when technical advice is needed.
- To assist when required, with professional technical presentations to customers.
- To evaluate technical aspects of recommended new developments.
Support to Service Department
- To assist Test Technicians with site testing and factory testing of systems.
- Submission of drawings and testing instructions for new schemes.
- To assist on Breakdown calls during and after normal working hours.
Commissioning
- Provide commissioning service to Customers.
- Commission part or complete substation LV, protection, control and metering schemes.
Training
- To assist in training any Trainee Technicians allocated to the Company as required.
- Prepare and present Training Courses to Internal and External Customers.
Skills and Knowledge
- Knowledge of MS Office
- Strong written & verbal communication skills
